The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for all of central Illinois, including Champaign County, effective at Midnight tonight through 10 AM Tuesday morning. At this point in time, I expect this to be a fairly minor event in the Champaign-Urbana area. Light rain will develop and overspread the area around 12 AM, with off and on light rain lingering into the early morning hours. Ice accumulations will be likely be between .05" and .10" in CU. The higher ice accumulations on the order of .20" to .30" will be found to our northwest along a line from Quincy IL to Chicago IL.
While accumulations should be minor - any amount of icey glaze on top of the already snow covered roads will create treacherous travel conditions for the Tuesday morning commute so do allow plenty of extra time for you to get from Point A to Point B. I don't expect this to be a crippling ice event on the order of tree branches snapping and power outages - *but* travel will definitely be impacted. And hey, sometimes it's that very first step... so be careful when you walk out onto your front porch with your morning coffee in hand tomorrow!
