Friday, December 12th:

TGIF! We’ve got a quiet day ahead, but more snow and another round of dangerously cold Arctic air is in the forecast for the weekend. Snow should begin falling across central Illinois mid to late Saturday morning and fall steadily through the day, with around 2 to 4 inches of new snow accumulating across Champaign County by the time snow tapers off on Saturday evening. A shot of Arctic air spills in behind the storm system, dropping temperatures below zero Saturday and Sunday nights, with wind chills -10 to -20 at times. The coldest air lingers Saturday night into Monday morning, with a significant WARM UP expected next week.

THE HAZARDS:

A clipper system brought several inches of light powdery snow to central Illinois overnight, and another round of snow and dangerously cold Arctic air is headed for the area this weekend. Today and tonight will be quiet locally, but snow should begin falling in Champaign-Urbana on Saturday morning, with light to moderate snow continuing through the day. 2 to 4 inches of new snow is expected, with bitterly cold air to follow. Temperatures will fall below zero Saturday and Sunday nights, with wind chills 10 to 20 below zero at times. Milder air and a much needed thaw is expected by mid next week.
